Founded in 1991, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art is one of few museums in the world dedicated to the genre of outsider and self-taught art. The museum champions diverse artistic voices, art made by creators who faced socioeconomic, political or geographic barriers to a traditional path to artmaking. Intuit is a welcoming space, inviting all to explore the power of the genre by engaging with programs and exhibitions like Ted Degener: At Home with Artists. Ted Degener has spent more than 50 years trekking across the U.S., seeking encounters with the makers of art environments. At Home with Artists—Degener's first major exhibition—features a selection of photographs and home videos he captured of these artists in their spaces, in addition to works by artists L.V. Hull, Leonard Knight and Dr. Charles Smith. The exhibition, as well as a second exhibition highlighting works on paper by Purvis Young, runs through Labor Day, after which Intuit will close to the public to begin construction to renovate and transform its 150-year-old historic building into a modern, accessible museum.
For this site visit on Tuesday, July 11 starting at 1:00 pm, Intuit is normally closed to the public, but they are opening their doors for the Chicago Tour-Guide Professionals Association (CTPA). Intuit President, Deb Kerr, will be on hand to lead tours and show renderings of the future of the museum, which will nearly triple its space upon reopening in late summer 2024. This event is graciously organized by CTPA member Gilbert Longoria and sponsored by The Chicago Tour Company. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with this one-of-a-kind museum, and it will interest travelers interested in exploring Chicago's unique cultural institutions that are off the beaten path. Register for this CTPA site visit here.
This program is limited to the first 75 registrants, and there is a waitlist available in case it fills up. If you register for the event and can no longer attend, please cancel your own event registration by going to the Calendar on the CTPA website, clicking the "Already registered" link on under this event description, and then the "Cancel registration" button.
We hope you can make it to this CTPA site visit! If you would like to organize a future CTPA site visit, please email CTPAofficers@googlegroups.com.
